Braunston tunnel will be closed to traffic from 07:30, possibly until 09:30 on Monday 7th August for the passage of two wide-beam boast, travelling from Braunston to Welton.

Boats may enter the tunnel if directed to do so by a Trust representative at the tunnel portal or after 08:30 if no representative is present.

Murphys undertaking clearance and investigative works on behalf of National Grid around their infrastructure.

Works to be done without disturbance to boaters with towpath and navigation to remain open (at times with pontoon diversion).

Our contractors are still to attend site to deal with the fallen tree is completely blocking the navigation approximately 100m southeast of Bridge 12, ‘Massey’s Bridge,’ on the Trent & Mersey Canal.

NAVIGATION CLOSURE (12noon Friday 4 August 2023 until further notice)

A fallen tree is completely blocking the navigation approximately 100m southeast of Bridge 12, ‘Massey’s Bridge,’ on the Trent & Mersey Canal.

Our operations team has been informed and has arranged an urgent job for contractors to attend and clear the obstruction.

We expect to have this tree removed later this afternoon; however, we will update this notice at the end of the day when more information is received.

Manchester

Lock 79 Coal Pit Middle

Starts At: Lock 81 Butler Street
Ends At: Lock 72 Scothmans

Update on 08/08/2023:

We are pleased to advise that the boat has now been recovered from Lock 73, and the temporary repair to Lock 79 is now complete. Please note, navigation through Lock 79 is possible with use of one working head paddle only until further works can be carried out. Navigation has now resumed between Lock 72 and Lock 81 on the Rochdale Canal.

Update on 07/08/2023:

Please be advised navigation remains closed between Lock 72 and Lock 81 on the Rochdale Canal.

Our local operations team have been onsite at Lock 79 today and have started the temporary repair to the paddle which became detached. They will be returning to site tomorrow to continue with the repair.

Third party contractors will be onsite at Lock 73 tomorrow to attempt to recover the sunken boat from within the lock.

A further update will be provided tomorrow afternoon, Tuesday 8 August.

Update on 04/08/2023:

Please be advised navigation remains closed at Lock 79 on the Rochdale Canal due to an issue with the head gate paddle.

Following further investigations today, we have found that the paddle has become detached and is within the lock chamber. Our team will aim to retrieve this over the weekend period and attempt a temporary repair on Monday.

Please note, padlocks have been placed on Lock 81 and Lock 72 to prevent entry to the flight, as there is also sunken boat at Lock 73 in which our teams are assisting with its recovery.

A further will be provided by Tuesday 8 August.

Lock 8, Holme Lock

Update on 03/08/2023:

Our engineers have attended site this morning and Holme Lock is now operational again.

There is a fault with the operational pedestal at Holme Lock resulting in a temporary closure. 

Our engineers will be on site tomorrow to investigate further but initial findings indicate that it may be closed for the next two days.

We will update this notice on Friday 4th August, or sooner if more information is received.

Hungerford

Pump Out, Bridge 83, Station Road

Update on 10/08/2023:

We are pleased to advise that the pump out at Hungerford has been repaired and is now fully operational.

ADVICE (10am Wednesday 2 August 2023 until further notice)

Please be advised that the pump out at Bridge 83, Hungerford has failed and is currently inoperable.

Contractors have been informed and we will update this notice when the repair has been completed.

Bridge 57, Grafton Bridge

Update on 10/08/2023:

The tree has been cleared and boaters can now proceed as normal.

Update on 09/08/2023:

Contractors are continuing work to clear the fallen tree, which is partially blocking the navigation near to Grafton bridge 57 on the Grand Union canal.

Narrowboats can pass with care; however, passage may prove difficult for wide-beams and is not advised.

We will update the website on Thursday 10th August, with further information on progress as soon as it is received.

Contractors have commenced work to clear the fallen tree, which is partially blocking the navigation near to Grafton bridge 57 on the Grand Union canal.

They aim to complete the work by the end of the day tomorrow. 

Narrowboats can pass with care, however wide-beams will not manage to navigate past the tree.

Paddle Failure
Lock 35, Stegneck Lock

Update on 03/08/2023:

Repairs to the failed paddles have been successful,

To make sure the water has recovered navigation will commence at 2pm. 

NAVIGATION CLOSURE (8am-5pm Thursday 3 August 2023)

We will be closing the navigation to perform emergency repairs to the lock, this is due to paddle failure. 

Works will commence Thursday 8am,

Canal and River Trust apologise for any inconvenience these works may cause you.

Hunts Small Lock

RESTRICTION (1-4pm Thursday 3 August 2023)

Please be advised navigation will be closed tomorrow between the hours of 13:00 & 16:00 at Hunts Small Lock, Weaver Navigation due to the team needing to repair the top gate walkway.
