Bridge 20, Coxhead Swing Bridge

Update on 26/07/2022:

We are pleased to advise the barrier fault has now been resolved at Bridge 20, Coxhead Swing Bridge on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal and navigation has resumed.

Our contractors have been informed and we anticipate their attendance on site tomorrow morning, Tuesday 26 July.

We are pleased to advise the tree obstructing navigation has been removed and the canal is now open between Bridge 94, Moss Lane Bridge and Bridge 95, Knowsley Road Bridge on the Macclesfield Canal.

Please be advised navigation is closed between Bridge 94, Moss Lane Bridge and Bridge 95, Knowsley Road Bridge on the Macclesfield Canal due to a fallen tree. 

Contractors have been informed and we anticipate they will be on site tomorrow to remove the obstruction.

Update on 18/08/2022:

This tree has been removed and the navigation is now clear

RESTRICTION (10pm Sunday 24 July 2022 until further notice)

A large tree has fallen across the navigation approximately 150m east of Bridge 55 near Laughton. The tree has been partially cleared by our out of hours team and local boaters so the canal remains navigable although there is still an obstruction on the offside of the canal so please take care if passing through the area. 

Our local Customer Operations team will investigate this further during the week and will look to get the remaining tree material removed as quickly as is possible.

Towpath, Bridge 109 to Bridge 110, Rishton

ADVICE (8am Monday 25 July until 5pm Monday 8 August 2022)

Please be advised contractors will be onsite between Bridge 109, New Barn Bridge and Bridge 110, Aspen Bridge on the Leeds & Liverpool canal to carry out further towpath improvement works.

Whilst the towpath will remain open to use, please listen to any advice that may be given by the contractors onsite.

Works will be carried out over the next 2 weeks, with an expected completion date by Monday 8 August.

RESTRICTION (9.30am Monday 25 July 2022 until further notice)

Please be advised there is a large tree branch under the water, in the centre of the navigation.

Could skippers of all craft slow down on approach, this notice will be updated when it has been removed.

Update on 24/07/2022:

We have been working to restore the water levels in the local pounds and we are now able to reopen the navigation.

NAVIGATION CLOSURE (6.30pm Friday 22 July 2022 until further notice)

Due to tampering with the water levels the pound from Greens Lock to Potters Lock has been drained and it is now not navigable. We have therefore temporarily closed the pound to allow time for levels to recover. 

We will work to refill the pound although with the low inflow from the River Erewash and the water level in the pound above Potters being low this might take some time to recover. 

The Kiln – Visitor Moorings

ADVICE (Thursday 21 July 2022 until further notice)

We have had to isolate and close off one of the electric posts on the Kiln Moorings, due to it being miss-used and severely damaged.

We do not have a time scale as to when we will be able to replace the post and so for the time being, there is now only one working electric post on the Kiln Moorings.

As soon as we have more information, we will update the website.

Update on 25/07/2022:

We are pleased to advise the water levels have recuperated well over the weekend and navigation has resumed on the Ashton Canal. Our teams will continue to monitor the water levels and may need to close the navigation at short notice should the levels begin to decrease again.

NAVIGATION CLOUSRE (2pm Thursday 21 July 2022 until further notice)

Due to the continuing dry weather and knock-on impacts from planned reservoir works, the amount of water coming into the Ashton Canal is now insufficient to allow navigation. We have therefore taken the decision to close the canal to navigation with immediate effect and will review the situation again on Monday 25th July. In the meantime, our teams continue to work on a system of operation to be able to resume navigation, albeit with significant restrictions. It is likely, however that the closure will continue beyond 25th July.
