Lock 8, Mayroyd

Update on 13/09/2023:

The water levels have held and we are able to reopen the Lock.

It has been advised for skippers of all crafts when using the head gates to open and close the gates together as this creates a better seal on the lock gates, where possible.

Update on 12/09/2023:

The local team have assessed the water levels this morning and unfortunately the water levels are still low and have not recovered as hoped even with the pumps.

It appears that the issues maybe that the cill caps on the gates from Sunday onwards have been moved or knocked. This has led to a vast amount of water coming through the gates as it is unable to be sealed tightly to keep the water in.

Further work to fix the cill caps may need to be undertaken by our contractors.

The gates will remain locked until further notice.

We will update the notice when we receive any further information.

Update on 11/09/2023:

RESTRICTION (9am Monday 11 September until 12noon Tuesday 12 September 2023)

Update on 11/09/2023:

The work to seal the gate better, hasn’t worked properly.

The lock gates will continue to be locked and we will leave the pump to run overnight to replenish water levels.

The team will assess the situation tomorrow morning, to decide whether the lock is able to be opened.

We will update the notice tomorrow morning.

Original message:

There’s a significant amount of leakage through the towpath side gate. The water op is going to get some equipment to help the gate seal better. In the meantime it would be better to not use the lock so we have locked them until our operative goes to Sowerby and back. We will update this notice later today.
