Stoppages & Restrictions

Castle Mills Lock downstream landing stage

RESTRICTION (Wednesday 3 March 2021 until further notice)

Further to our emergency navigation closure notice issued on 8 January 2021, the majority
of the fallen tree has now been removed, however the stump still remains on the upstream
side of the landing stage. Please note that the existing gravel shoal in this area has moved
in high flows encroaching into the navigation channel by the downstream landing stage.

Navigation is still possible but we strongly advise that only one craft at a time should be on
or in front of the downstream landing stage when entering or exiting the downstream side
of the lock travelling in either direction. Please check before entering the lock and hold off
giving way and priority to any traffic already within the lock and proceed with exteme
caution.

In addition please be aware that due to the reduced channel width, some wider beamed
craft will find negotiating passage past the landing stage more difficult or even not
possible. Deeper drafted craft may come into contact with the gravel bar by the landing
stage. River flow is also being funelled and so will be faster than normally would be
expected at this site when entering or leaving Castle Mills Lock on the downstream side.

For further information, please contact the Environment Agency on 03708 506506 between
9am and 5pm Monday to Friday and ask for the Great Ouse Waterways team
