BOATERS can once again navigate the River Severn between Stourport and Gloucester after vital repairs reopened Bevere Lock, near Worcester.
An inspection discovered a faulty paddle on the 183-year-old lock that was preventing it from filling properly, impacting boaters travelling between Stourport and Gloucester.
The fault, located below the waterline, required the assistance of specialist divers to carry out repairs. This involved lifting out the paddle so repairs could be completed safely on land before being returned into the water to get the lock working again.

At the same time, improvements have been made to the gearing mechanism used to operate the lock gates, and all other lock paddles were inspected to ensure they are functioning correctly.
Like all locks on the River Severn, Bevere, the furthest upstream, is electronically operated. The repairs come as the Canal & River Trust is also investing £355,000 in lock gate repairs at Diglis Small Lock, Worcester.
