As volunteers around the country are praised for their contributions to the work of the Canal & River Trust through its annual awards ceremony, you have the chance to join them and make a difference.

BEING recognised for their exceptional contributions, dedication and community spirit was a proud moment for many a volunteer within the Canal & River Trust. In a series of features, Towpath Talk is shining the spotlight on the winners honoured at the trust’s latest annual awards ceremony. In this issue, we focus on Yorkshire and the North East.

Andy Ellison was named the region’s Volunteer of the Year in recognition of his unwavering dedication and positive spirit. A key member of the Bingley 5 Rise lock keeping team, Andy plays a vital role in ensuring the safety of boaters while also mentoring new volunteers as they find their feet. Beyond lock keeping, Andy contributes to a wide range of seasonal and year-round maintenance tasks, from clearing culverts to installing moorings. His support doesn’t stop outdoors either – Andy has also taken on essential office duties, expertly managing lifejacket logistics to ensure smooth and safe operations. Known for his cheerful approach and reliability, Andy is widely regarded as an invaluable asset to the team, said the trust.

The Wellbeing & History Walk Leader Team was awarded Volunteer Team of the Year for its outstanding commitment to improving both mental and physical health within the community. Operating in Sheffield and Tinsley, this dedicated group of volunteers leads weekly walks and wellbeing activities that provide a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for people of all ages and abilities. Through their consistent efforts, the team has helped participants stay active, learn about local history, and, most importantly, build meaningful social connections. Their work continues to make a lasting difference to community wellbeing.

Steve Shersby was recognised as Lead Volunteer of the Year after three years of exceptional service. Steve leads training and assessments for volunteer lock keepers in South Yorkshire, contributing more than 500 hours of volunteer time each year. Based primarily at Mexborough Top, he supports day-to-day operations while also taking great care in maintaining the lock area. As a certified CAATs assessor, Steve ensures high operational standards and plays a crucial role in coordinating the safe and efficient movement of commercial craft.

Young Volunteer of the Year Eve Ingle has made an impressive impact at Brookfoot Lock on the Calder & Hebble Navigation. She approaches every task with enthusiasm and determination, from painting and litter picking to identifying and reporting maintenance issues. Her vibrant energy and willingness to help, said the trust, have inspired fellow volunteers of all ages, making her a valued and motivating presence on site.

The Canal & River Trust’s head of volunteering, Christine Mellor, praised all the award winners, explaining how there are a variety of volunteering opportunities within the trust. “There’s something for everyone,” she said, “and we’d love you to join our amazing volunteers in making such a difference.”
