Canalside café fights back against canal closure with walkers’ get-together and Christmas market

Despite the ongoing closure of the Llangollen Canal, a popular Shropshire canalside café is determined to keep welcoming visitors. Lockside Café at Grindley Brook is organising two community events this November and December, bringing together walkers, local residents and Christmas shoppers while supporting independent businesses.

Lockside Café, on the edge of Whitchurch, is preparing to host a Walkers’ Get Together and a Festive Market as it continues to trade through a challenging year.

The café has been affected by the closure of the Llangollen Canal, which has reduced boat traffic and visitor numbers in the area.

However, the family-run business is determined to end the year on a positive note by bringing people together and encouraging visitors to support local businesses.

Jane Beaumont, who runs the café with her son and daughter, Chris and Rachel Burtonwood, said the events were designed to welcome walkers, local residents and visitors while supporting the wider community.

Walkers invited to get together on November 13

The first event, a Walkers’ Get Together, takes place on Friday, November 13, and is open to everyone, from experienced ramblers to those who enjoy a gentle countryside stroll.

Visitors will have the opportunity to meet fellow walkers, exchange ideas for local walking routes and enjoy tea, coffee and homemade cake.

Four-legged friends are welcome too, with muddy boots and paws encouraged after a day exploring the surrounding countryside.

Jane said: “Our Walkers’ Get Together is a chance to meet like-minded people and enjoy some good company and a good natter over a cuppa and cake. What could be better in the middle of November?”

Festive Market brings Christmas shopping to Grindley Brook

The café will then host a Festive Market on Sunday, December 6, from 10am to 2.30pm.

The event will feature local stallholders offering gifts, crafts and seasonal products, giving shoppers the opportunity to find unusual Christmas presents while supporting independent traders.

The market is another way for Lockside Café to encourage people to visit Grindley Brook during the winter months.

Open for business despite canal closure

Businesses along the Llangollen Canal corridor have faced difficulties following the waterway’s closure, which has reduced boat traffic and affected visitor numbers.

Despite this, Lockside Café has continued to welcome customers and is keen to remind people that it remains open.

Jane added: “The canal closure has undoubtedly had a big impact on businesses that rely on visitors to the area, but we have been incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received from local people and regular customers.

“We want everyone to know that we’re very much open for business and we’d love to welcome both familiar faces and new visitors through our doors over the coming months.”
