Sutton Weaver Swing Bridge

Update on 14/08/2023:

We are pleased to advise the operating fault has now been resolved at Sutton Weaver Swing Bridge on the Weaver Navigation and navigation has resumed.

For boats with an air draught greater than 9ft 0ins / 2.74m wishing to navigate through this bridge, please call the North West Customer Support team on 0303 040 4040 to arrange an appointment.

Appointments can be made between 9am and 4pm, Monday to Friday and we politely request at least 24 hours’ notice, further information can be found here.

Please be advised navigation remains restricted to boats with an air draught no greater than 9ft 0ins / 2.74m at Sutton Weaver Swing Bridge on the Weaver Navigation due to a mechanical failure preventing the bridge from being safely operated.

Our Engineers and Local Operations team conducted test swings of Sutton Weaver Swing Bridge over the weekend period, the tests went well, however, we’re now awaiting the survey results from our specialist contractors.

Please note if your boat dimensions are suitable for a passage through Anderton Boat Lift, these restrictions do not apply.

Please be advised navigation remains restricted to boats with an air draught no greater than 9ft 0ins / 2.74m at Sutton Weaver Swing Bridge on the Weaver Navigation due to a mechanical failure preventing the bridge from being safely operated.

We continue to investigate the cause of the problem and identify remedial work which we hope will alleviate the problems.

Discussions are ongoing with Cheshire West & Chester Council to establish a suitable date for a road closure which will allow us facilitate work to the bridge caissons and to conduct test swings, we’re hopeful this will commence in early August.

Please be advised navigation remains restricted to boats with an air draught no greater than 9ft 0ins / 2.74m at Sutton Weaver Swing Bridge on the Weaver Navigation due to a mechanical failure preventing the bridge from being safely operated.

We continue to investigate the cause of the problem and identify remedial work which we hope will alleviate the problems, however, our Engineering team require further discussions to establish a suitable plan and date for a test trial swing.

A method of repair is now being created whilst we work with our contractors to arrange availability.

Near Stoke Lock

Update on 08/06/2023:

The police have now finished on site and boaters can proceed as normal.  

ADVICE (12noon-4.30pm Thursday 8 June 2023)

There will be a police dive taking place this afternoon from 12pm until 4:30pm near Stoke Lock.  

Boaters are asked to proceed with care and follow advice on site.  

There will be markers in the water to guide boats round the site. 

Burscough Customer Service Facilities

Update on 15/06/2023:

We are pleased to advise the toilet facilities are now back in use at Burscough Customer Service Facilities.

ADVICE (4.45pm Thursday 8 June 2023 until further notice)

Please be advised the toilet facilities at Burscough Customer Service Facilities are currently out of use due to being blocked.

Contractors have been informed and we anticipate their attendance.

An update will be provided Thursday 15 June.

Submerged Vehicle
Starts At: Lock 6, Woodnook Lock

The vehicle has been recovered from the navigation.

The navigation is open.

There is a sunken vehicle 20 meters upstream at the pinch point from the M62 bridge.

Until the vehicle has been recovered Woodnook and Kings road Lock are out of operation. 

Please do not attempt to pass, we will update this notice as soon as the obstruction is removed. 

NAVIGATION CLOSURE (1pm Thursday 8 June 2023 until further notice)

There is an on-going incident, the navigation is closed until further notice. 

We will update the notice when we have more information. 

Broad Street CSF

Update on 07/06/2023:

The toilets are now back open again, apologies for the delay.

ADVICE (10am Wednesday 24 May 2023 until further notice)

The toilets are currently closed due to sewage issues on site.

We are currently investigating the cause.

The Elsan is not affected.

Obstruction in navigation, due to vandalism
Starts At: Lock 21 East, Waterside Lock
Ends At: Lock 23 East

RESTRICTION (12.15pm Wednesday 7 June 2023 until further notice)

There is currently an obstruction(s) in the navigation between Lock 21 east to Lock 23 east that have been caused by vandalism of objects stones and poles thrown into the canal.

Movement is very restricted.

The team will be out to assess and to try and remove the objects from the canal.

We will update the notice when we have further information.

Pump Out, Tower Wharf Services, Chester

Update on 07/06/2023:

We are pleased to advise the Pump Out has been repaired and is now back in use at Tower Wharf Customer Service Facilities on the Shropshire Union Canal.

Please be advised our contractors have attended site and currently investigating the fault with the card reader at Tower Wharf Customer Service Facilities on the Shropshire Union Canal.

Whilst a method of repair is being organised the pump out will remain out of use.

Please be advised the Pump Out station at Tower Wharf Customer Service Facilities is currently out of use due to card reader fault. All other facilities are still in use.

BOOKING INFORMATION (7.30-9am Wednesday 7 June 2023)

Blisworth tunnel will be closed to traffic from 07:30, possibly until 09:00 on Wednesday 7th June for the passage of a widebeam boat travelling from Stoke Bruerne to Blisworth.

Boats may enter the tunnel if directed to do so by a Trust representative at the tunnel portal or after 08:00 if no representative is present.

Due to vandalism Locks 49 and 50 on the Grand Union will be closed from 15:30 to 08:30 and the navigation will be closed at these times.

This will be ongoing and updates will follow when available.

RESTRICTION (1.45pm Tuesday 6 June 2023 until further notice)

Please be advised that due to vandalism there is a navigation restriction between Lock 49 and Lock 50 on the Grand Union Canal.

Water point out of order
Long Sandal Lock Water Point, Low Side

ADVICE (1pm Tuesday 6 June 2023 until further notice)

The valve on the water point is broken therefore out of order, contractors have been instructed for attendance.

Once the waterpoint is repaired the notice will be updated. 

Elsan, Sutton Weaver Swing Bridge

Update on 08/06/2023:

We are pleased to advise the Pump Out has been repaired and is now back in use at Sutton Weaver Swing Bridge Service Facilities.

ADVICE (11am Monday 5 June 2023 until further notice)

Please be advised the Pump Out station at Sutton Weaver Swing Bridge Service Facilities is currently out of use due to the drain being blocked.

Contractors have been informed and we anticipate their attendance.

Appley Lock
Inside Track- Deep Lock

Update on 05/06/2023:

We are pleased to advise that Appley Lock, Deep Lock on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal has been repaired and is now back in use.

Update on 19/05/2023:

Please navigate through Appley Lock, Deep Lock on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal with caution. Navigation remains open; however, the ground paddle is currently removed for repairs.

An update will be provided Monday 5 June. 

Update on 15/05/2023:

Please  navigate through Appley Lock, Deep Lock on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal with caution. Navigation remains open, however the lock will take longer to fill due to an ongoing issue with the ground paddle.

ADVICE (3pm Wednesday 26 April 2023 until further notice)

Please be advised, following an inspection of Appley Lock, Deep Lock on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, we have noted an issue with the ground paddles. Whilst navigation is still possible, the lock will take longer than normal to fill.

Our teams are currently creating a method of repair and we politely request all customers to navigate with care during this time.

We have continued low water levels between Pastures Lock and Eastwood Lock and ask that you proceed with caution.

Higham Ferrers Upstream Canoe Portage

ADVICE (Wednesday 7 June until Friday 9 June 2023)

Please be aware that contractors will be on site repairing the upstream canoe portage at Higham Ferrers from 7 to 9 June 2023.
The repairs will be carried out mostly from land, however a small boat will also be used. Please heed any signage or instructions provided by the contractors on site and navigate with caution whilst in this area.
