The tree has been cleared and boaters can now proceed as normal.

There remains to be a tree in the canal between bridges 53 and 54, southwest of Foxton on the Leicester Arm of the Grand Union Canal.

There is room for boats to pass and our contractors will finish clearing the tree tomorrow.

Caution is advised to boaters navigating this section while the tree is removed. 

We will update the website tomorrow afternoon, once the job is completed.

A tree has fallen into the canal between bridges 53 and 54, southwest of Foxton on the Leicester Arm of the Grand Union Canal.

There is room for boats to pass and our contractors will be attending tomorrow to clear the tree from the navigation.

Caution is advised to boaters navigating this section while the tree is removed.

We are pleased to advise our contractors have managed to make temporary repairs to Coxhead Swing Bridge and it is now open again. They will be returning again next week to make permanent repairs.

Please be aware that navigation remains closed at Coxhead Swing Bridge. Our specialist contractors will be back on site tomorrow, 16th June 2023, to carry out further repairs.

Update on 16/06/2023:

We are pleased to advise the pump out at Johnsons Hillock Customer Service Facilities has now been repaired and is back in operation.

Update on 09/06/2023:

Please be advised the pump out remains out of operation at Johnsons Hillock Customer Service Facilities due to a fault with the pumps.

Our contractors will be attending site next week to facilitate a repair to the pump and drainage system that connects the pump out to the main septic tank. 

A further update will be provided Friday 16 June.

Update on 26/05/2023:

Please be advised the Pump Out remains out of operation at Johnsons Hillock Customer Service Facilities due to a fault with the pumps.

Our contractors will be attending site next week to continue investigations into the extent of the issue and to plan what remedial repairs are required.

Update on 29/06/2023:

Parts have been ordered to repair the gearbox and it is now expected to be fixed and operational next week.

This notice will be updated as we receive additional information.

Update on 26/06/2023:

The gearbox was removed on Saturday to identify and source the parts needed to rebuild the gearbox. Once the parts are available, the gearbox will need to rebuilt and returned ready for the installation.

Should there not be any delays to the repairs, the gearbox should be returned and installed towards the end of this week.

The notice will be updated with any further information that we receive

Update on 19/06/2023:

Scaffolding will be erected at the guillotine Lock on Thursday morning.

Engineers will be carrying out investigative work to find out what the fault is and what is needed to be done to repair the guillotine lock.

We will update the notice when we have any further information.

NAVIGATION CLOSURE (until further notice)

The guillotine lock – lock 19 – has failed and cannot be used until it has been fixed.

We have appointed a team to repair the lock and will provide an update when the work is complete.

Update on 16/06/2023:

Please be advised, navigation has resumed through Poolstock Locks on the Leigh Branch and Lock 86 on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal.

Whilst navigation is now possible, we politely request all customers to proceed through the area with care and help us conserve water by:

  • Sharing locks where possible and making the best use of the water available.
  • Ensuring paddles are fully closed once they have passed through a lock.
  • Aiming for minimal contact when navigating through locks by ensuring gates are fully open as they pass through. Pushing gates open using a boat can damage the gate lining, increasing its leakage.

Our local team will continue to monitor the water levels in the local area, however if you do experience low water, please call us on 0303 0404040.

Please be advised navigation is closed, following vandalism to Poolstock Lock where the paddles have been left open, the pound between Lock 1, Top Lock on the Leigh Branch and Lock 86 on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal is severely low on water.

The local team are aware and onsite feeding water down to the affected area. We anticipate this will take most of today to regain a navigable level.

The tree which has fallen halfway between bridge 17 and 18 and opposite culvert 2 on the River Soar is still pending removal. We are awaiting our contractors to schedule this within the next few days.

The tree partially blocks the navigation but is passable with care, except for widebeam boats.

We advise caution to boaters in this section until removal.

An update to this message will be posted on June 19th, 2023.

We are pleased to advise navigation has resumed at Northgate Locks, Chester on the Shropshire Union Canal following a successful repair to Lock 3 by our specialist contractors.

Update on 16/06/2023:

Our contractors have attended Lock 3, Northgate Locks, Chester today to attempt a temporary repair, unfortunately this has been unsuccessful, and navigation remains closed.

We are now looking in to an alternative method of repair and an update will be provided by Tuesday 20 June.

Update on 15/06/2023:

Unfortunately, we have not been able to carry out a repair to Lock 3, Northgate Locks on the Shropshire Union Canal today. Following further inspections, specialist contractors are required.

We are speaking with our contractors to organise attendance.

A further update will be provided tomorrow, Friday 16 June.

Update on 19/06/2023:

A new gearbox has been installed and the bridge is open for navigation traffic. 

Update on 13/06/2023:

The new gearing mechanism will be installed on Friday the 16th of June. The bridge will be closed on this day to allow the installation. 

The present opening times of 08:00 to 17:00 will remain in place until Thursday. 

Update on 08/06/2023:

A temporary gearing mechanism has been installed. An operative from the Rodley Bridge Management Company will be on site between 8am and 5pm to assist boaters. Passage outside of these times will not be possible.

NAVIGATION CLOSURE (8.30am Wednesday 7 June 2023 until further notice)

Moss Swing Bridge is closed due to vandalism of the gearing mechanism. 

The Rodley Bridge Management Company are sourcing a new gearbox and will be installing it as soon as possible. 

The bridge will remain closed to all navigation traffic until the installation is complete.
