Please be aware the Bedford Fire Service will be holding a Drowning Prevention Day water rescue demonstration at 11:15 on the Embankment tomorrow 25 July 2023. W3W:// picked.refers.crest at the launch point behind the Longholme Café.
Please take care when navigating in this area and take heed of any signage or instructions from the event’s organisers and marshals on site.

Ashby Canal

Wellsborough Bridge

Update on 25/07/2023:

The fallen tree has now been cleared at this location. The navigation is now open.

Update on 24/07/2023:

Contractors have attended the fallen tree approximately 150 yds south of Bridge 37 on the Ashby Canal.

They have removed some of the vegetation from the canal, but as the tree is still attached to the land on the offside we require a workboat to assist with the works.

The team will attend with a workboat tomorrow morning.

The tree is therefore still blocking the navigation and boaters are advised not to travel this section.

We will update the website with further information on Tuesday 25h July. 

NAVIGATION CLOSURE (9am Monday 24 July 2023 until further notice)

A large tree has fallen from the offside, approximately 150 yds south of Bridge 57 on the Ashby Canal.

It is blocking the navigation and partially blocking the towpath.

Our team will be on site as soon as possible to asses the situation.

Boaters are advised to avoid this section of the navigation for the time being.  

This notice will be updated later today.

Ure Navigation

Milby Lock (Lock 3) Broken stalk Repaired

Update on 10/08/2023:

Water levels have returned to normal and the stalk has been repaired.

The lock is operational.

Update on 04/08/2023:

Repairs to the stalk have been delayed due to high water levels preventing access, we will assess on Monday. 

Update on 31/07/2023:

The stalk has broken from the downstream towpath side gate.  Navigation is closed until a temporary repair has been completed. 

ADVICE (10.45am Monday 24 July 2023 until further notice)

Milby Lock gates are due to be replaced in Winter 2023 as they are nearing the end of their life. In the meantime, please adhere to the following operating advice to ensure your passage through the lock is as smooth as possible.

Upstream gates use

Due to increased water entering the lock: –

  • Please close Offside Gate (nearest the pontoon ) first to reduce water ingress into the lock chamber.
  • Close all forward hatch covers and keep your craft away from the upstream gates.

Downstream gate use

Due to increased water entering the lock from the upstream gates: –

  • Please stay clear off upstream gates to prevent water ingress into your craft.
  • Close all forward hatch covers and keep your craft away from the upstream gates.
  • When opening Downstream gates please fully open both paddles and allow time for the level in the lock to equal.

River Nene

We would like to issue a polite reminder to all boaters to please leave the Locks in the correct position with the guillotine gate raised and the v doors closed when navigating along the River Nene, this ensures water levels remain navigable. Please also ensure control boxes are locked after use.

Huddersfield Narrow Canal

We are pleased to advise the tree obstructing the towpath and navigation has been removed and the canal is now open between Lock 8 West and Lock 9 West on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.

NAVIGATION CLOSURE (11.30am Monday 24 July 2023 until further notice)

Please be advised the towpath and navigation is closed between Lock 8 West and Lock 9 West on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal due to a windblown tree.

Contractors have been informed and we anticipate they will be on site tomorrow to remove the obstruction.

An update will be provided Tuesday 25 July.

Rochdale Canal

We are pleased to advise the repair to Lock 69 on the Rochdale Canal has been successful and navigation has resumed.

Due to an issue with the paddle gearing at Lock 69, the canal is closed between locks 68 and 70.

We will issue an update on Monday afternoon.

Leeds & Liverpool Canal

Update on 27/07/2023:

We are pleased to advise the large windblown tree has been removed from the canal between Bridge 18, Lydiate Hill bridge and Bridge 19, Jacksons Bridge on the Leeds & Liverpool canal and navigation has resumed.

Update on 26/07/2023:

Please be advised navigation remains closed between Bridge 18, Lydiate Hill bridge and Bridge 19, Jacksons Bridge on the Leeds & Liverpool canal due to the windblown tree.

Our contractors will be returning tomorrow morning to continue their works to remove the tree.

A further update will be provided tomorrow afternoon, Thursday 27 July.

Update on 25/07/2023:

Our contractors are currently onsite removing the large windblown tree between Bridge 18 and Bridge 19 on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal.

Whilst works continue, navigation will remain closed and a further update will be provided tomorrow, Wednesday 26 July.

We are pleased to provide an update earlier than planned and can advise that the cill works at Lock 48 have been completed this morning, and the canal has reopened.

NAVIGATION CLOSURE (5.45pm Friday 21 July 2023 until further notice)

The canal is closed between Lock 47 – 48 due to a damaged cill at Lock 48.

Our team will inspect and plan a repair and an update will be issued on Monday (23rd) afternoon.

BOOKING INFORMATION (7.30-9am Monday 24 July 2023)

Blisworth tunnel will be closed to traffic from 07:30, possibly until 09:00 on Monday 24th July for the passage of a widebeam boat travelling from Blisworth to Stoke Bruerne.

Boats may enter the tunnel if directed to do so by a Trust representative at the tunnel portal or after 08:00 if no representative is present.
