Huntingdon town bridge area Update on 11/02/2023: The narrowboats in the Huntingdon area have now been secured and the Navigation Notice has been rescinded. ADVICE (Friday 10 February 2023 until rescinded) Please be aware we have received a report of two narrowboats Withnell Fold Starts At: Bridge 86, Brown House Bridge We are pleased to advise navigation and towpath access has resumed between Bridge 86, Brown House Bridge and Bridge 90, Ollerton No. 2 Bridge on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. Please note, we are still in discussion with the third-party owner and building control. We may need to close navigation and towpath access again at short notice should further works be required. We will endeavour to provide as much notice as possible, however safety will remain our paramount concern. Please be advised, to maintain the safety of our customers following the incident last week, the canal and towpath remains closed between Bridge 86, Brown House Bridge and Bridge 90, Ollerton No. 2 Bridge on the Leeds & Liverpool canal. Our teams are now speaking with building control regarding the stability of the third-party owned building and an update will be provided by Friday 17 February. Please be advised, following the incident last week and to maintain the safety of our customers, the canal and towpath remains closed between Bridge 86, Brown House Bridge and Bridge 90, Ollerton No. 2 Bridge on the Leeds & Liverpool canal. Our teams are seeking to speak with the relevant third party regarding the stability of the building and an update will be provided by Wednesday 15 February. Please be advised, due to the ongoing incident on the offside and to allow safe access to the emergency services, the canal and towpath is now closed between Bridge 86, Brown House Bridge and Bridge 90, Ollerton No. 2 Bridge on the Leeds & Liverpool canal. Once the emergency services have controlled and extinguished the fire, we will then need to ensure the third-party building is stable to allow passage through this area. An update will be provided Monday 13 February. RESTRICTION (11am Friday 10 February 2023 until further notice) Please be advised navigation is currently restricted at Bridge 88, Withnell Fold Bridge, on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal due to a fire incident at a third-party building on the offside. Please navigate the area with caution. A further update will be provided this afternoon. Perry Barr CSF including Elsan Both door issues have been resolved and access is now possible again. ADVICE (3pm Thursday 9 February 2023 until further notice) Both the door to the facilities and Elsan are not opening at the moment. Please bear with us whilst we instruct a locksmith to attend. Starts At: Bridge 47, Solomon’s Bridge Further to the notice below, we are pleased to confirm that the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal is now successfully refilled to normal levels and open to navigation. Update on 13/03/2023: We are happy to advise that the canal is filling slightly faster than anticipated. The canal between Brecon Basin and lock 68 is now at normal navigation level and the stop planks have now been removed at Talybont (bridge 146). The water levels either side of the stop planks at bridge 120 are now the same and the levels in this long pound are rising steadily. We expect to remove the stop planks on Tuesday 14th March and for the water to reach normal navigation level within the next day or two. Please be aware, following high winds, a number of trees have fallen and are blocking navigation. A separate notice will provide more detail of these. Further to the notice below, we are pleased to advise you that all winter works have now been completed and we are in the process of refilling the canal which has started very well. Customers may experience fluctuations in levels as this continues. We are currently taking as much water as we are permitted to from the River Usk and are monitoring this daily to make appropriate adjustments. The section to Talybont (bridge 146) is being filled first, and we expect the next section, Talybont to the locks, to start filling over the weekend. The locks will then fill in succession. We have left stop planks in at bridge 120 to help manage the refilling process and expect water to start passing beyond these early next week. We anticipate normal navigational levels will be restored along the length of the canal by the end of the day on 17th March. Further to the notice below, works above Brynich Lock have been completed and we have been able to raise water levels between Brecon Basin and Bridge 157 Llan-Brynean Bridge. RESTRICTION (3.30pm Wednesday 8 February 2023 until further notice) We are aware that levels across the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal have dropped significantly over the last few weeks. The recent dry spell means that the canal is not taking in water from surrounding land as it usually would at this time of year, and we are unable to transfer water along the canal from the main feeder in Brecon in the usual way, due to our planned stoppages. We recognise the difficulties this causes our customers, particularly businesses, but regret we are unable to raise levels until there is sufficient rainfall to fill the canal with run off, or until work at the stoppage sites is completed. Knowle Customer Service facility The facility is now back open again. ADVICE (9am Thursday 9 February 2023 until further notice) The Elsan is out of use as the drains have been blocked. Please bear with us whilst our contractors deal with the issue. Starts At: Lock 1, Top Lock, Leigh Branch Please be advised that the towpath is now open. However, contractors will continue to work on reinstating the back verge & sets to the rear of the towpath. Fencing will be in place to separate our customers from the ongoing works until 3rd March, TOWPATH CLOSURE (8am Wednesday 8 February until 5pm Friday 17 February 2023) Please be advised that third-party contractors will be onsite between Lock 1, Top Lock and Lock 2, Bottom Lock on the Leigh Branch (Leeds & Liverpool Canal). The third party contractors are working for Electricity Northwest and will be excavating under the towpath to carry out a repair on a cable. The towpath will remain closed and a diversion route will be in place. Boaters to re-board when leaving locks 1 and 2. Whilst the navigation will remain open we politely request all customers to approach the area with caution. Please take note of the signage and to listen to any advice that may be given by the third party contractors onsite. Low water levels at Lock 9 and Lock 10 Our operatives have been working to rectify the issues all morning and it appears that there is still tampering occurring, so we shall be locking up Lock 9 within the next hour lasting overnight whilst the team are resolving the low water issues. The team will monitor the water levels and return back to Lock 9 tomorrow morning, to see if the issues have improved. ADVICE (9.45am Tuesday 7 February until 9.45am Thursday 9 February 2023) Please be advised, following vandalism whereby the paddles at Lock 10 and Lock 11 were found to be opened last night. Lock 9 and Lock 10 currently have low water levels. The local team are aware and are onsite feeding water down from the pounds above to the affected area. This may take 24 hours to increase the water levels. Approx. 1 mile downstream of St Ives Lock Update on 10/02/2023: The tree has been removed and therefore this notice is now rescinded. ADVICE (Monday 6 February 2023 until rescinded) Please be aware of a tree restricting the navigation channel by 50% approximately 1 mile downstream of St Ives The W3W reference is :///bachelor.radiated.pesky Customer Service Facilities closed ADVICE (12noon Monday 6 February 2023 until further notice) Please be advised the customer service facilities are closed due to a leak. Contractors are due on site. We will update the notice as soon as it has been rectified. Repair ADVICE (12noon Monday 6 February 2023 until further notice) Repair work is being carried out to Rainbow Bridge. A pontoon is being placed in the water to allow work to be carried out. Boaters are advised to slow down when approaching the bridge and allow the team time to clear the navigation. Stopping may be required whilst this happens. The work will not affect traffic on evenings or weekends. Lock 29, Grand Union (Hatton Locks), Warwickshire NAVIGATION CLOSURE (until 4pm Saturday 11 February 2023) We apologise for the lateness of this updated. We need to extend these works at Lock 29 until 10/02/2023. This is because the condition of several gates was worse that anticipated. Once the team had full access, it was identified that several paddles need to be changed on the gates which will require more time than planned. We apologise for any inconvenience. We would like to advise of this additional stoppage that we have added to our Winter Programme. A stoppage is required to carry out the following. Works to realign and refit the top and bottom gates. There is currently significant water loss which is causing issues for our volunteer lock keepers and colleagues carrying out additional water control. There is already a full navigation stoppage at Lock 25 covering this period, so this section of canal is already closed. We think it’s best to take this opportunity to carry out this work at the same time. Bull Street Bridge, Silver End Navigation open. Unfortunately we have experienced some delays with arranging a crane wagon. We now expect to have navigation open again Friday 10th February. We have arranged for a crane wagon to arrive onsite to remove the bricks on Wednesday 8th February. We are therefore hoping to have navigation open by then. NAVIGATION CLOSURE (8pm Sunday 5 February 2023 until further notice) There has been a bridge strike at Bull Street Bridge on the Stourbridge Canal yesterday evening. The team have been out to make the area safe but there is a substantial bit of parapet wall making navigation impassable through the bridge. Our team will be on site this morning to see how they can remove the wall safely. We will aim to provide another update by 12 noon today. Pitchfork Bridge TOWPATH CLOSURE (7am Monday 6 February until 6pm Friday 10 February 2023) Scaffolding will be installed on the towpath around the overhead water pipe west of Pitchfork Bridge to undertake emergency repairs to the pipe and the towpath will be closed underneath the bridge. However, towpath users will be able to cross the bridge anyway using the other pathway next to the section to be closed. Navigation will remain open. Signage and banksmen will be utilised to manage canal traffic and pedestrians on the towpath. We kindly remind boating customers and towpath users to follow signage and directions given on site. Starts At: Bridge 88, Twynglas RESTRICTION (8am Monday 6 February until 6pm Friday 31 March 2023) Please be advised that we are working with Brecon Beacons National Park Authority to carry out towpath improvement works along the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal. Works will be completed by contractor OTM Groundscare Ltd as listed below. Pedestrians and cyclists should approach with caution. Please see the following schedule: Week 1 – Bridge 114 to 116 Week 2 – Bridge 98 to 111 Week 3 – Bridge 111 to 113 Week 4 – Bridge 88 to 90 Week 5 – Bridge 90 to 92 Week 6 – Bridge 92 to 94 Week 7 – Bridge 94 to 95 & Bridge 122 to 123 Week 8 – Bridge 123 to 126 & Bridge 147 to 148 Week 9 – Bridge 148 to 151 Week 10 – Bridge 157 to 162
