From 1pm today there will be a wide-beam boat journey on the North Oxford Canal from Dunchurch Pools Marina to Braunston.

We kindly remind boating customers to be aware of the wide-beam boat and take extra care whilst navigating through this section of the canal.

Update on 22/03/2023:

Tree has been cleared

NAVIGATION CLOSURE (1pm Tuesday 21 March 2023 until further notice)

A tree has fallen and is currently blocking navigation between Bridge 56 & Bridge 57 on the Shropshire Union Canal.

Our contractors have been contacted and we are hoping they will attend to this later today. We will post updates as soon as they are available.

Towpath near Stainland Road Bridge

TOWPATH CLOSURE (8am Tuesday 21 March until 6pm Sunday 30 July 2023)

Contractors are constructing a new bridge over the canal which will require a towpath diversion route.

Towpath users should use the towpath diversion route as signposted. This route has been agreed with the highways authority and disability groups and is suitable for all towpath users.

Kredas undertaking investigations of North circular Aqueduct, Northfields

Please be advised that there will be a waterborne investigation of the aqueduct. The towpath and navigation will be unaffected

Please be advised that Murphys are undertaking clearance and investigative works on behalf of National Grid around their infrastructure. 

Various surveys including;

• Boreholes/Trial holes

Works to be done without disturbance to boaters with towpath and navigation to remain open (at times with pontoon diversion).

The waterway is now clear and open

NAVIGATION CLOSURE (7pm Friday 17 March 2023 until further notice)

Bridge 17A, a local authority owned footbridge, has collapsed and has blocked the navigation. The towpath remains open via a short local alternative route. The local authority is determining how the bridge can be removed. 

Fallen Tree

Update on 17/03/2023:

Please be advised due to unforeseen circumstances there has been a delay in our contractors attending the fallen tree between Bridges 64 and 65 on the Macclesfield Canal.

 We now anticipate their attendance Monday 20 March.

 A further update will be provided Monday 20 March. 

NAVIGATION CLOSURE (12.45pm Thursday 16 March 2023 until further notice)

Please be advised the navigation is closed between Bridge 64 & Bridge 65 on Macclesfield Canal due to a windblown tree.

Contractors have been informed to remove the obstruction.

An update will be provided Friday 17 March.

Lock 1 Sowerby Bridge

RESTRICTION (4pm Thursday 16 March 2023 ntil further notice)

Due to a deterioration on the lock footpath we have had to close off the Bridge on Lock 1, along with the footpath area surrounding it. A temporary fence has been set up to avoid the area where the cobbles are unstable. Please avoid walking in this area. Access to the wharf is available from the bridge towards the Tunnel on the Lock 2.

Update on 17/03/2023:

We would like to advise our customers of the need to extend this stoppage. The team on site have experienced some delays due to the bad weather late last week and some additional work to the balance beam has been required. The stoppage will now end on 21/03/2023. We apologise for any inconvenience this will cause.

We are sorry for the lateness of this update. We need to advise that an extension is required to this stoppage until 21/03/2023. Following the canal bed repair, we now need to remove a large amount of excess silt. If the silt removal is completed before 21/03/2023, we will update this notice to advise. We apologise for any inconvenience this extension will cause.

Original message:

A stoppage is required to carry out relining of Culverts 4, 5 & 6. We will also carry out some repairs to the canal bed.

Tewitfield Customer Service Facilities

ADVICE (3pm Wednesday 15 March 2023 until further notice)

Please be advised the toilets facilities at Tewitfield Customer Service Facilities are currently out of use due to a fault with the taps. All other facilities are still in use.

Contractors have been informed and an update will be provided on Monday 20 March.

Towpath
Starts At: Lock 6 Kidderminster Lock

TOWPATH CLOSURE (Wednesday 15 March until 6pm Friday 16 June 2023)

Navigation will remain open.

Contractors on behalf of Worcestershire County Council will be renewing the towpath between the access points.

The contractors will have advance towpath closure warning notices in place at the relevant access points, together with diversion information.

The towpath closure will be in sections to minimise disruption.

Red Bull Customer Service Facilities

Bridge 134

ADVICE (12.30pm Tuesday 14 March 2023 until further notice)

Please be advised the Red Bull Customer Services on the Trent & Mersey Canal are closed due to an on-going leak.

Contractors have been informed and an update will be provided by Tuesday 21 March. 

Please note the waterpoint is not affected.

ADVICE (until 5pm Sunday 30 April 2023)

Contractors on behalf of Cadent Gas will be carrying out maintenance to cathodic protection points sited at three locations at rear of towpath. The towpath will remain open with users being safely managed through work areas.
