Ashton Lock to Downstream Road Bridge Area

The Advisory Notice issued on 2 March 2023 for Ashton Lock is now rescinded as the branches have been removed.

ADVICE (Thursday 2 March 2023)

We are aware of several branches and trees extending into the
navigation in the area from Ashton Lock to the downstream road
bridge.
We will investigate their removal in due course. In the meantime,
please exercise caution when navigating in this area.

Opposite Pike & Eel Public House

The boat adrift has now been secured until river conditions improve, therefore, our Advisory Notice issued on 23/03/23 is now rescinded.

Please be aware a boat has become adrift opposite the Pike & Eel public
House at Overcote Lane which we will look to secure once river conditions

Caution when passing through lock
Lock 5, City Road Lock

ADVICE (12.30pm Thursday 23 March 2023 until further notice)

Please be advised that there is a bent metal plate on the lower towpath gate and caution should be taken when passing through.

Operations team are aware and organising a repair.

Bridge 21, Dead Dog Basin

TOWPATH CLOSURE (until 5pm Wednesday 19 April 2023)

The finish date for works has been changed to the 19th April. Temporary Pontoon will remain in place

Rainbow Bridge 60, Conisbrough

RESTRICTION (11am Friday 24 March until 6pm Sunday 16 April 2023)

Please be advised third party works are conducting repairs to the bridge, this will include scaffolding erected in the waterway with a pontoon.

Would skippers of all craft slow down on approach and take direction from any staff on site. 

Culvert 4.5,6 Little Stanney

TOWPATH CLOSURE (until 5pm Friday 24 March 2023)

Please be advised that third-party contractors will be onsite between bridge 140A, New Stanney bridge and bridge 140, Mason’s bridge on the Shropshire Union Canal. 

The third-party contractors will be carrying out demobilisation of canal dewatering kits and the towpath will remain closed. 

Whilst the navigation will remain open,  we politely request all customers to approach the area with caution and be prepared to stop if necessary. 

Please take note of the signage and to listen to any advice that may be given by the third-party contractors onsite.

Below Lock 25 – tree removed

Update on 23/03/2023:

Contractors have attended site and the tree has been removed from the towpath and navigation.

NAVIGATION CLOSURE (3.45pm Friday 10 March 2023 until further notice)

A large tree has fallen blocking the navigation and towpath, just below Lock 25.

Contractors have been contacted to remove the tree, but delays may occur due to the current weather conditions.

We will update the notice when the tree has been removed.

Houghton Lock DS Landing Stage

ADVICE (Wednesday 23 March 2023 until rescinded)

Please be aware there is a submerged lump of concrete at the downstream
end of Houghton Lock Downstream Landing Stage which could be a potential
hazard when water levels drop.
Navigation is still possible in this area but boaters are
requested to proceed with caution.

Ends At: Lock 15, Kirklees Low Lock

NAVIGATION CLOSURE (8am-4pm Wednesday 22 March 2023)

Navigation will be closed between the locks to allow the water level to be reduced to facilitate a sluice repair.

Canal and River Trust apologise for any inconvenience this may cause you.

Barrowford Flight
Starts At: Lock 51, Bottom Lock

NAVIGATION CLOSURE (8am-12noon Thursday 23 March 2023)

Please be advised our local team will be onsite at Lock 51, Bottom Lock, on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal to carry out an investigation to the ground paddle on Thursday 23 March, from 8am to 12pm.

To ensure a safe working environment, padlocks will be placed on Lock 51 and Lock 45 to prevent access to the Barrowford flight.

Update on 03/04/2023:

The leak has been fixed.

The waterpoint has developed a leak, our contractors have been informed so please bear with us whilst we get the leak resolved.
