Lucy Wood reports…
WOODY flow deflectors have been installed in the River Roding, Essex, to add habitat diversity and direct the water’s power to sweep away excess sediment.
The project was managed by the Wild Trout Trust. “Just one day later, the gravels downstream of the deflectors were noticeably cleaner than the upstream ones,” it said.

“Too much fine sediment can cause problems for many wildlife species, including brown trout. It fills the gaps between the gravels, which are where several key invertebrates live. It can also cause the gravels to become compacted into a solid mass, which stops brown trout from building their nests.
“We are delighted to be working with the Environment Agency and the River Roding and West Essex Farm Cluster to deliver this fantastic project.”
