RESTORATION of the Grade II-listed Lambley Viaduct across the River South Tyne is due to be completed ‘very soon.’
The South Tynedale Railway Preservation Society is completing work on the 108ft Victorian structure, built, it is believed, with the involvement of Newcastle-born engineer Sir George Barclay Bruce nearly 175 years ago. Urgent repairs were needed after some stonework became dislodged, resulting in the structure’s closure.
Works carried out by Bell Access and Engineering are due be completed very soon, and the viaduct will reopen.
Society chairman Ian Millward said: “The viaduct’s preservation will ensure that future generations can use the scenic route across the viaduct, marvel at the Victorian engineering, and enjoy the spectacular views.”
