AFTER a navigation closure notice restricted access to the Macclesfield and Peak Forest canals in August, local MP Lisa Smart is now in talks with the Canal & River Trust to explore how similar closures can be avoided in future.

The MP for Hazel Grove has already raised concerns in a dedicated Westminster debate, highlighting the risks facing the area’s waterways following Government funding cuts to the Canal & River Trust. She has warned that low water levels — which led to the recent closure — could cause long-term damage to vital canal infrastructure and put the region’s industrial heritage at risk.

The navigation closure was introduced after water levels fell at Bosley and Bollington reservoirs, combined with ongoing works at Toddbrook Reservoir. The restriction remained in place until October 31.

Speaking about the situation, Lisa Smart said:
“Our campaign to have this area made a World Heritage Site highlights just how remarkable it is, but the failure to invest in local waterways could result in long-term damage.

“Low water levels could result in canals being put at risk of greater damage, doubling the negative impact of these funding cuts.”

She also stressed the need for urgent action, both in terms of immediate maintenance and the wider challenges posed by climate change.

“We need to make sure that the Government is tackling the practical works that are needed, at the pace that is needed, as well as responding to the longer-term issue of climate change,” she said.

“When you see the practical impacts and costs of climate change on local features such as these canals, it really brings home how important it is to deal with this now, not leave it to the next generation.”
