Brecon Canal illuminated as communities mark 225th anniversary

Up to 2,000 people gathered along the Brecon Canal for a series of illuminated evening events marking the waterway’s 225th anniversary. The celebrations formed part of a year-long programme led by Glandŵr Cymru.

Up to 2,000 people came together to light up the Brecon Canal during a week of celebrations marking the canal’s 225th anniversary, with events taking place across four evenings.

Each night, hundreds of people lined the towpath to watch a procession head north towards Brecon. The parade featured a life-sized illuminated horse and otter, alongside decorated boats, creating a moving display along the canal.

The celebrations culminated in a special entrance into a lit-up Brecon Basin, as the final evening concluded outside Theatr Brycheiniog, at the most northerly point of the canal in the centre of Brecon.

The events formed part of Glandŵr Cymru’s year-long programme to mark the anniversary of the canal.

David Morgan, development manager for Wales at Glandŵr Cymru, said the celebrations reflected the affection communities have for the waterway and highlighted the role it plays for those living alongside it.

He added that the canal runs through communities within the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park and into the centre of Brecon, where it continues to be an important part of local life.
