For the first time this year, the Ethel Trust’s community barge ‘Pearl’ has supported the Ghost Ships of Doncaster fund raising event. The Trust’s volunteers, holders of the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, decked out the barge with lights, skeletons, witches’ cauldrons and all things ghostly, to support the community raising funds for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the Canal and River Trust. 12 volunteers from the Trust gave their time for the day to dress the barge and take her to Long Sandall ready for the 3 hour night time 14 boat convoy to the New Inn at Stainforth. Many hundreds of families with children lined the banks of the canal to watch the spectacle, “Happy Halloween” being screamed appreciatively, many times to the participating barges.

The Ghost Ships project has been an opportunity for the Ethel Trust to support the local Doncaster community, and at the same time raise awareness of the Trust’s work in supporting disadvantaged groups across the region. The 50 strong volunteer group operates 2 fully accessible community barges on the Sheffield & Tinsley and Stainforth & Keadby canals, providing day and residential experiences.

User groups range from primary aged children with learning difficulties, young people with mental health issues and their families, to adults at risk of social exclusion and those living in residential or nursing care homes. The Trust is always looking to increase the number of volunteers to be able to offer its services to as many disadvantaged and vulnerable groups as possible.
