The Canal & River Trust is inviting visitors to experience Foxton Locks after dark and discover the fascinating nocturnal wildlife that calls the historic site home.
The charity is hosting a series of guided evening bat walks at Foxton Locks, giving people the chance to learn more about local bat species while exploring one of Leicestershire’s most iconic canal destinations under the stars.
Participants will take a gentle guided walk around the site, using specialist equipment to listen out for bats, and find out more about the different species that can be seen around the locks and surrounding areas. Visitors will be able to learn more about the Trust’s work to protect and improve wildlife habitats along the waterways.

The family-friendly experience is suitable for anyone aged 12 and over, with under-18s accompanied by an adult. All equipment will be provided and, after the walk, visitors can warm up with hot chocolate and toasted s’mores.
Canals and rivers are particularly good places for bats as they provide safe corridors, a source of drinking water, and a ready supply of midges and other flying insects to feast on.
Emily Davis, volunteering leader for the Canal & River Trust, said: “Foxton Locks is a fantastic place to connect with nature, and our bat walks offer a unique opportunity to experience the site in a completely different way. As darkness falls, the canal corridor comes alive with wildlife and visitors might be surprised by just how many different species can be found here.
“Whether you’re a wildlife enthusiast or simply looking for an enjoyable evening outdoors with family and friends, these walks are a great way to learn more about bats and the important habitats they depend upon. We hope people will join us to get that little bit closer to the wildlife that thrives alongside our waterways.”
Spaces are available on walks taking place on Monday 14th and Wednesday 23rd September. Places on the walks, which both start at 8pm, are limited and advance booking is required.
