The Ashby Canal Association is celebrating its first 60 years by holding its Diamond Gathering over the weekend of 5th, 6th of September, at the former Snarestone terminus of the Ashby Canal. Open from 10 to 6 both days, this is a chance to come along and see what is happening on the Ashby Canal. There will be a variety of boats attending, trade stalls, displays, and boat trips.
The Ashby Canal Association was formed because of concern caused by the progressive closure of the northern 8 miles of Ashby Canal due to mining subsidence. The Association is now actively involved with restoration of the canal from Snarestone to Measham, and in due course to connect to the restored length at Moira.
Chairman of the Association, Peter Oakden is pleased with the way the Wharf has turned out. “The Ashby Canal Association volunteers have put a lot of work into the canal terminus over the years” he said. “It is their base for maintenance work on the canal, and for their shop, selling collectibles, books, drinks and ice cream over the summer season. The canal has been previously owned by the Midland Railway, the influence of which can be seen by the impressive railway hardware around the site recently restored and installed by the Association!

Since the closure of the local collieries, there have been major steps to restore the Ashby Canal. Over a mile has been completed at Moira, development of 1100m of canal at Measham is far advanced in connection with a housing estate and about 600m has been restored at Snarestone.
