The future of one of Wales’ most cherished waterways has just received a significant boost. The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal – a vital lifeline for local wildlife, businesses, and tourism – will continue to flow thanks to a long-term funding commitment announced by the Welsh Government.

Deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies confirmed that the Welsh Government will provide up to £400,000 per year for the next five years to secure essential water supply to the canal. This funding will help ensure year-round navigation and protect the canal’s unique ecosystem, while also supporting local economies that rely on the waterway.
In addition, a further £100,000 annually will be contributed to enhance water access, boosting resilience for one of the most scenic and tranquil inland waterways in the UK.
This much-needed investment will benefit communities, canal users, and heritage preservation groups across the region – and helps safeguard the Mon & Brec Canal as a thriving asset for future generations.
