A BASIN between times

by

From Exhall Basin:

On a quiet stretch of the Coventry Canal, between the city’s edge and the winding turn at Hawkesbury Junction, lies Exhall Basin, a private mooring site that rests gently between the industrial past and the personal journeys of modern boaters.

IT IS not dramatic or sprawling. It is not loud or urban. But it is real – a secure and quietly compelling place to moor. Now under the careful stewardship of Waterpride Estates Ltd, Exhall Basin, soon to be known as Sutton Stop Marina, in Coventry, represents a fresh chapter in the ongoing story of England’s inland waterways. Not so much a revolution, but a return to what matters.

A quiet line in the industrial story

Situated between Coventry and Bedworth, Exhall has long been shaped by industry. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, coal mining and brick-making dominated local trade, supported by the strategic transport links of canal and later rail.

The Coventry Canal, authorised in 1768 and initially engineered by James Brindley, became a vital route for coal traffic. Its course led through Exhall, on the way to the now-famous Hawkesbury Junction, where it meets the Oxford Canal via a narrow stop lock – once the symbolic boundary between rival canal companies.

A place apart – and that’s its strength

Exhall Basin is neither buried in countryside nor pressed against a city centre. It occupies a place of balance, just north of Coventry, within reach of Bedworth, and with close access to the M6. It offers seclusion without isolation.

This private mooring benefits from:

  • Gated site access
  • Secure residential moorings (currently 12 berths)
  • On-site electricity and drinking water
  • Elsan disposal and refuse facilities
  • Private car parking for moorers

Though compact, the basin is neatly maintained and practical in layout. It has the feel of a tucked-away retreat for those who value still waters and slower living.

Further enhancements including shower and toilet blocks, pump-out facilities and visitor moorings are being actively explored as part of Waterpride’s long-term development plans.
