EXPLORE the magical world of dragonflies

There’s plenty of time to get involved in the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust’s summer Dragonfly Festival. It’s taking place until September 22 at all 10 of the WWT’s wetland sites in the UK.

“Dragonflies are some of nature’s most dazzling creatures, with their shimmering wings, acrobatic flight, and vibrant colours,” said the trust. “A living link to the past, these ancient wonders of wetlands ruled the skies long before the first dinosaurs walked the earth.

“They’re not just beautiful – they’re also incredibly important and are powerful indicators of environmental health, thriving in clean wetlands.

“A summer-long festival is a great way to celebrate these remarkable creatures. WWT’s first ever Dragonfly Festival invites festival-goers to make wonderful memories together and discover a dazzling line-up of events and activities for everyone to enjoy.

“Dragonflies love being near freshwater habitats like ponds, lakes, rivers and marshes. They need water to breed, so anywhere with a good source of clean water is a great place to find them. You’ll often see them zipping around reeds or resting on plants near the water’s edge.

“They are most active during warm, sunny days, especially between late morning and mid-afternoon. They love basking in the sun and are usually out hunting when temperatures are at their peak.”
