A PROJECT to help fish navigate a stretch of river in West Yorkshire has ended in success. Lucy Wood reports…
The Wild Trout Trust said: “After partially removing a step that stopped brown trout from migrating upstream, Jon Grey, the trust’s research and conservation officer, has now added baffles to this culverted stretch of river.
“These particular baffles are flexible strips that attach to the channel bed. They break up the river’s flow, making it easier for small fish to swim against it. They also raise the water level, helping fish to pass over the remaining part of the step.
“As a result, two populations of wild brown trout have now been reunited. They will have access to more breeding habitats and be less vulnerable to pressures like disease and pollution, which can devastate isolated populations.
“We are delighted to be working with Aire Rivers Trust, Bradford Council, the landowner and our funders to deliver this fantastic project. Look out for more updates soon.”
