Under Bridge 12, Thurcaston Road Bridge

Update on 20/12/2023:

After a further review by our engineers, it has been decided that Thurcaston Road Bridge is to remain closed off with permanent fencing.

The closure is still in place as the sink hole is still there and needs our maintenance team to carry out the required repair works.

The towpath is still closed although we have been able to reduce the risk on the ground with the improved fencing.

Work is being planned in for next year, and we will update this notice by the end of August or as soon as we have further information.  We will continue to monitor the situation carefully.

Contractors working on behalf of High Speed 2 Limited, are undertaking works to construct a new railway viaduct over the canal.  To undertake these works, the contractor has installed a temporary towpath through the works and boat movements will be reduced to one boat through the works at a time.

Towpath users are required to use the temporary towpath which is on a pontoon. Temporary traffic lights will be installed to control boats moving through the works area.

Short duration towpath closures may be required by the contractor between November 2023 and March 2025. Please pass through the area with care.

Pontoon installation with priority navigation, south of Lock 86 Widewater Lock

ADVICE (Wednesday 15 June 2022 until Friday 31 May 2024)

Due to major HS2 works, the access track to the Angling Club adjacent to the offside of the canal will be closed to allow construction works to take place. To provide access, the contractor would like to install a temporary pontoon roadway over the canal.

A pontoon, 33m in length will be installed on the offside, 560m South of Lock 86 Widewater Lock of the Grand Union canal. The pontoon will be maintained by HS2s main contractor Align and will be fitted with edge marker lights.

There will be Priority Narrowing to the navigation using chicane buoys and advanced warning signage will be in place on the towpath.  Navigation will be single file for both narrowboats and wide beams and boating traffic may have to stop and give priority in equal amounts. Mooring provision is not present within the vicinity of the site and will not be provided due to the profile of the canal bed.

Customers will not need to book, and the towpath will remain open.

The pontoon and priority narrowing to the navigation are expected be in place for up to 2 years
