President to represent Staffordshire in Thames pageant

President, the surviving steam-powered narrowboat part built in Staffordshire, will represent the county in the 1000-boat flotilla on the Thames as part of the Diamond Jubilee Pageant on 3 June 2012.

This historic vessel will shortly be making the 336-mile journey to London as it literally flies the Staffordshire flag. The journey is being funded exclusively by sponsorship from major Staffordshire businesses including JCB, Michelin, Wedgwood and St. Modwen.

New online facilities for Broads boaters

21 February 2012.

BROADS boat owners are able to renew their tolls online by registering their details on https://tolls.broads-authority.gov.uk

 They will then be sent a pin number which gives access to the site. After signing a declaration that they have third party insurance they will be able to buy a new toll provided their Boat Safety Certificate is up to date. They will also be able to update their mooring location and order tide tables online.

Prices set to rise at some BW moorings

20 February 2012.

CUSTOMERS on British Waterways moorings in England and Wales will see an average price increase of 2.6% from April.

 But there will be no price increase for customers moored at over half of BW’s directly managed sites.

Change of date for Huddersfield canal open day

20 February 2012.

BRITISH Waterways’ scheduled Open Day on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal at Lock 31W has been changed from today (February 20) to Monday March 12.

 An Open Day has already gone ahead along the canal at Lock 40E in January as part of British Waterways’ annual £50 million national winter maintenance programme where 15 locks are having new lock gates fitted or repairs carried out.

Aqueduct Marina celebrates third anniversary

STAFF at Aqueduct Marina near Church Minshull welcomed 150 guests on Saturday to mark the third anniversary of its opening on 14 February 2009.

Moorers, customers, friends and suppliers enjoyed an afternoon and evening of eating, drinking and celebrating the occasion.

Olympic rower launches waterways clean-up

10 February 2012.

OLYMPIC gold medallist rower Mark Hunter has launched an appeal for volunteers to help clean up east London's waterways in time for the 2012 Games.

It is hoped to get at least 4000 people involved, attending more than 80 events, including walking litter picks, wildflower meadow planting and invasive weed species removal.

Voting starts today in CRT council election

8 February 2012.

VOTING opens today (Wednesday 8 February 2012) to select the seven volunteers who will be elected onto the new 35-strong Council of the Canal & River Trust.

 Four positions will be elected by boat licence holders and two positions elected by boating businesses. Employees of the Canal & River Trust will also elect a staff representative to the Council.

Marina developer welcomes planning consent

8 February 2012.

AT A recent meeting of Cherwell District Council Planning Committee, members approved the proposed development of a new marina to the north of the village of Cropredy, on the Oxford Canal.

 The new development will provide an offline marina for 249 boats, on land which is currently in agricultural use. The marina will occupy less than 20% of the overall site, and be positioned on the lowest ground, well away from the houses on the northern edge of the village. Presently, there is only one small offline marina on the Oxford Canal in the 44 miles between Oxford and Napton, which is reflected in the large numbers of boats moored along the banks of the canal.

LOCAL communities are being invited to play an active role in the future of their local waterway – with a special open evening being staged at Anderton Boat Lift for prospective volunteers. 

It is being held on Thursday February 9 between 3pm and 7pm, giving people a first-hand chance to see how they might become involved and make a difference.
