As a consequence CRT are temporarily, and reluctantly, closing the canal between Kilby Lock 30 and Kings Lock 38 from 3pm on Wednesday 27 September.

Peak Forest Canal: Lock 16 Ends At: Lock 1

Update on 26/09/2017:

Following the detailed survey that was completed last week we can see that the lock has become too narrow to be operated safely.

This is very disappointing news. We are looking into the design of the repair and how this can be fitted into our works programme. It’s going to be a significant and complex project, and we need to work with our contracting partners to make sure that we can get the repair done quickly but at a reasonable cost too. It’s unlikely that we will be able to give any definitive information about reopening for a couple of weeks but we can see that the lock will be closed here for some time.

Update on 22/09/2017:

Following investigation and getting detailed surveys of the lock subsidence, it is not possible to re-open the lock today as we originally anticipated. Further works are still ongoing and we hope to be able to provide an update early next week.

Update on 14/09/2017:

Following initial surveys and investigations at the lock CRT have confirmed that alongside the subsidence evident on the lock side the towpath side wall has moved and the lock is narrowed.  Further work is needed to confirm precisely the scale of the problem which will take place over the next week.

CRT are hopeful that the lock can be reopened, albeit with a reduced width for the time being and expect that the restriction would mean that only boats up to 6’10” width will be able to pass through it but will be able to confirm this when the more detailed survey has been completed.

Work is also needed to repair the superficial damage to the lock side and install gauging at the top and bottom of the lock flight before it can be reopened and it is  currently estimated that the lock will reopen with a restriction around 22nd September 2017.

Ashton Canal: Lock 1 Ends At: Lock 18

Update on 08/09/2017:

The main repairs for the lock have now been completed and the site is being cleared which will be completed this afternoon. Some pounds on the canal have low water at the moment which is a consequence of the work that’s been done, and our team is resolving that.

While the canal will be navigable by 4pm tonight, the suggestion is that people waiting to travel may wish to wait until first thing tomorrow (Saturday)

River Witham: Lock 1, Stamp End Lock Ends At: Lock 4, Boston Lock

ADVICE (Tuesday 25 July 2017 until further notice) Each year, especially during the summer months, we experience weed on the River Witham that can create problems for boats using the navigation.

The growth of weed is a result of the nutrients within the water and the amount of sunlight and some flows in from the numerous watercourses that join the Witham and so to a large extent we have little control of how much weed is present on the river.

CRT use weed boats to remove this weed, typically from May through to September, and place it on the banks of the river. They also place booms across some of the tributaries to reduce the amount of weed entering the Witham and ask the Environment Agency to operate their sluice at Boston to flush the weed downstream.

Please report any sightings of weed growth to enquiries.eastmidlands@canalrivertrust.org.uk

Rochdale Canal: Lock 1 Ends At: Lock 92 Castlefield

ADVICE (5pm Wednesday 19 July 2017 until further notice) The dry year so far means that it has been a very demanding period for water since April. CRT want to make sure that we will have enough water to keep the canal fed and navigable up to the end of October. Unlike many canals the Rochdale Canal is not fed by a reservoir owned by Canal & River Trust or from a river, but from a regulated supply of water that comes from a utility company reservoir. That means that there is a strictly controlled amount of water that can be fed into the canal over the summer period. CRT have investigated the possibility of buying supplies over and above its budget of water but, while this is something that they have been able to do in previous years, this year that isn’t a possibility owing to maintenance work that is taking place in the Utility company reservoirs that the water comes from.

In order to make savings to the amount of water it is proposed to close the summit to navigation on Mondays and Fridays until the water supply situation becomes more clear, and expect to bring this control in with the first day of closure being Monday 4th August.

The canal will be locked off Locks 34 in Warland and 44 in Summit, on the evening of the day before the closure day and unlocked again on the morning of the next day of navigation. There is mooring immediately below these locks for people who are delayed by the closure.

However, despite best efforts water levels can still drop and whenever water levels do drop, the team will try to rectify this as soon as possible.

Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal: Lock 37 Filance Lock

ADVICE (12noon Tuesday 11 July 2017 until further notice) Please be aware that due to a new bulge in the chamber wall the lock width has been reduced slightly and may pose a hazard to some wider boats. The new minimum dimension is approximately 2.15m which is only just over 7ft (2.134m) and has reduced the amount of flexibility that boats have to manoeuvre within the lock.

The works to address the issue are being planned for this winter but in the interim period please take care when using the lock.

Leeds & Liverpool Canal: Stanley Dock Top Lock Ends At: Lock 1, River Lock

UPDATE 12/6/2017

Recent heavy rain has brought a welcome refill to the canals and helped improve reservoir levels. As they are still below the average, CRT are keeping Thrift and arrangements for the Wigan Flight in place.

ADVICE (Wednesday 31 May 2017 until further notice) The Canal & River Trust is reminding boaters on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal to help conserve water. We’re doing this because rainfall has been lower than usual this year and our reservoir holdings on the canal are less than we would like to see.
