June issue of Towpath Talk out now!

by

Flaming June is almost here, and with it comes the longest day of the year. How the weeks and months fly by!

As ever, your jam-packed Towpath Talk is buzzing with news and views, and lots of ideas for where to go and what to do this summer. Quite a few events have already taken place, including Norbury Canal Festival, the 18th Skipton Waterways Festival and the IWA’s Canalway Cavalcade in Little Venice, London, and they all feature in this issue.

There’s the latest chapter in the journey from the Mediterranean to the English Channel by barge by Simon Jenkins, who finds an angry French bargee is not happy to see Simon and his crew. If you want to learn a little bit of ‘angry French’, read the latest issue!

The last weekend in June will see popular TV boaters Timothy West and Prunella Scales return to Braunston Historic Narrowboat Rally and Canal Festival, the largest gathering of former canal working narrowboats in the country. And there are plenty of other canalside and waterway events to entertain those with a love of water and the great outdoors – even a two-day event in Berkshire called ‘For the Love of Gin’!

Boar horse Cracker is still champing at the bit, having his say on everything from the speed of ‘over-enthusiastic’ boaters to the decision by the Scottish Maritime Museum to refer to ships by the gender-neutral ‘it’, rather than ‘she’. And on that same topic, there’s an interview on the news pages with the director of the museum, who won’t be changing his name… David Mann.

As usual, Towpath Talk is full of useful contacts, whether you are thinking of buying, hiring or selling a boat, or have one that needs upgrading or repairing. There are ideas for holidays, places to eat, a selection of book reviews, and even a treasure hunt competition in which the top prize is a GPS portable boat tracking system!

So it’s worth picking up a copy of Towpath Talk from your nearest chandlery or other stockist… copies are free! Or you can subscribe and pay just the cost of postage to make sure you get your hands on a copy each and every month. That’s just £11.99 for a whole year’s worth of news, chat, letters, tips and even gardening hints and recipes, delivered to your door. What’s not to like?
