Update on 22/09/2021:

We are pleased to advise that the navigation has reopened. Pollution booms are still in place on the offside at Bowen’s Bridge. We kindly request boating customers to travel in the middle of the channel with extra caution through this area. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Update on 21/09/2021:

Our contractors have been working through the night to successfully limit the spread of the oil, which we’re delighted to say has had limited impact on wildlife so far.  As there’s still some oil in places, and a risk of further oil washing in from road drains if it rains, we’re not yet able to reopen navigation, but are hoping to do so before the end of Wednesday 22nd September.

Reopening will depend on the pollution being sufficiently contained, but we’ll let you know either way tomorrow.  Once we’re open, we’ll need your help to travel with caution through the area while the residual oil continues to break down. In the meantime, it would be appreciated if you can let us know if you see any signs of fish and wildlife in distress, so we can react accordingly.

Update on 20/09/2021:

We continue to work on removing oil and pollution from the canal. Booms have been deployed and we are closely mointoring the situation. Further updates will be provided as work progresses.

NAVIGATION CLOSURE (6.30pm Sunday 19 September 2021 until further notice)

The Police & Fire Services are dealing with  a significant oil pollution. Over 700 litres of oil has entered the canal. Canal& River Trust are working with the emergency service and apologies for any inconvenience.
