Dudley Canal Tunnel and Limestone Mines are celebrating receiving a grant from the Big Lottery Fund for their first ever Festival of Light event this November.
On Saturday 5th November, Dudley Canal and Tunnel Trust are inviting people to join them to celebrate the triumph of light over darkness with a free 30 minute boat trip into the caverns. Underground light displays and music will combine with some original exclusive commentary for a unique boat trip experience.
“We are delighted to have been awarded this grant,” says Sarah Fellows, Heritage Activities Officer. “We’re really looking forward to welcoming people from the local community to celebrate with us on a boat trip.”
There is no booking necessary for the Festival of Light – visitors will be allocated seats onto the boats on a first come, first served basis on the day.
“The Festival of Light theme is one that we hope will appeal to everyone,” says Sarah. “Whether you’ve been on our boat trips before or not, there will be something new to discover underground here on the 5th November.”
The £6,100 grant is coming from the Big Lottery Fund through their Celebrate! programme, which is designed to bring people together in a local community to celebrate something meaningful to them.
Major funding partners for the project to create the Portal include the European Regional Development Fund £997,000, Heritage Lottery Fund £989,000, Black Country Local Enterprise Partnership £755,000 and Biffa Award £500,000. Other charitable donors include The Garfield Weston Foundation, J P Getty Jr Charitable Trust, Headley Trust, The Wolfson Foundation, Dudley Canal Trust, Dudley Canal Trust (Trips), and £30,000 raised by a public appeal.
Boat trips will be running all day from 10.30am. For more information see Dudley Canal Trust’s website www.dudleycanaltrust.org.uk or call 0121 557 6265.
