Working in the woods

THE Uppermill Community Association’s first UCAN Project Day of 2017 focused on cutting back of dead vegetation in the wooded area under Limekiln lock.

This previously unused and overgrown land space is benefiting from the extra natural light, with wild flowers planted by the group in autumn beginning to come into bud.

The intention of vegetation clearance work in this area is to include tree management into the task force objectives in and around the area and will be added into some of future UCAN sessions, mainly in the winter and late summer months to avoid the bird-nesting season.

UCAN’s upcoming project days will also focus on improving access to the canalside seating area at the Wool Road car park end of the towpath, which has become very overgrown last summer, as well as continue with other tidying tasks such as litter-picking.

Newcomers are warmly welcomed to join future group activities. Upcoming dates are:

  • Saturday 18th February – Regular UCAN activities.
  • Thursday 2nd March – Regular UCAN activities.
  • Saturday 25th March – Regular UCAN activities.

The usual meeting point is 10am at Limekiln lock, but this is sometimes changed. New volunteers are advised to check a few days in advance, with the Project Day calendar view-able on our website: http://ucanuppermill.com/.
