Aire & Calder Navigation Main Line: Lock 3, Knostrop Lock Ends At: Bridge 2, Crown Point

ADVICE (Monday 20 February until Monday 19 June 2017) As many customers will already know, Leeds City Council are carrying out a multi-million pound scheme in Leeds City Centre to improve flood resilience in the area.

The scheme involves replacing two weirs, river widening as well a series of flood walls, the majority of the works taking place along the navigational corridor.

CRT has been working with the council, their designers and their contractors throughout the whole process to minimise impact on customers, but inevitably on a scheme of this nature, there is the potential for delays and closures.

A significant proportion of the works have now been carried out, with the overall scheme due for completion in 2017.  Some closures to the navigation took place last winter, but on the whole, the majority of the works to date, have been carried out with minimal impact to navigation.  Towpaths have been kept open where practical, otherwise diversions have been put in place.

Further closures of the navigation were envisaged and being planned for this winter, however the progress of the works were significantly impacted by the devastating effects of Storm Eva last December.  Despite efforts to pull this back on programme, delays have incurred which will delay the timing of the second phase of navigation closures.  CRT is working with Leeds City Council to look at options to keep this to a minimum and investigating other practical alternative solutions for boats, but at the moment closures of 4 weeks between 20 February and 16 April for Knostrop Fall Lock and 2 weeks between 22 May and 19 June for Knostrop Fall Lock and Crown Point Bridge are being considered.

CRT will do all it can to ensure the closures are kept to an absolute minimum and that the dates are confirmed as soon as possible.

Glasson Branch (Lancaster Canal): Lock No.7, Glasson Basin Lock
Up Stream Winding Hole: Glasson Basin
Down Stream Winding Hole: Glasson Dock

Update on 06/01/2017: Following a request from customers and an additional period of consultation CRT have decided to reduce the period of the stoppage from the original 10 week closure to five weeks. The revised stoppage period will now run from  9th of January to 13th February. This will allow greater opportunity forboating customers to move during the post-Christmas winter stoppage period.

To facilitate this reduction in duration CRT have had to decrease the scope of the works undertaken this year and we will be concentrating efforts on the repair of the bottom lock gates. The result is they will be returning to Glasson Lock next winter to complete the works to the top gates.
