Taking Olympic security a step too far

BRITISH Waterways, which runs London’s canals, has announced that it plans to shut a key lock at Commercial Road on the Regents Canal, some 1.75 miles from the Olympic site, during the Olympic Games period on security grounds.

This will cut off access to Limehouse Basin and the Thames and will be in addition to proposed security barriers on the Lee Navigation alongside the Olympic Park.

While one fully appreciates the need for security around the Olympic site, canal users consider this provocative move takes Olympic security a step too far. Surely a system of ‘pre-booked’ transits through Commercial Road Lock could easily be arranged which would meet all reasonable security checks?
