June launch for Canal & River Trust?
By: Bob Clarke
DUE to negotiations still taking place between the Trustees and Defra, the launch of the Canal & River Trust has been postponed and it is understood that a new launch date of June 2012 is now considered likely.
The main topic still appears to be the question of funding with the Trustees adamant that the current offer of £39 million is simply not enough to give the Trust a flying start. Supporters regard the postponement as a positive situation in that the Trustees having dug in their heels with Defra.
A June start is regarded as the best bet as it will be before the London Olympics in July, the summer holidays and the Government's summer recess.
It is also expected that once the preliminaries have been completed, the matter could be subjected to consideration by a Government Select Committee prior to finalisation of the transfer.
