Regent's canal re-opens following oil spill

Regent’s Canal reopened to boat traffic on Friday following a temporary closure following an oil spill from National Grid cables.

British Waterways and the Environment Agency advised and aided National Grid to ensure the clean-up was quick and effective to minimise the environmental impact of the spill.

The speedy clean-up has also avoided unnecessary disruption to commercial boats, such as the popular trip boats operating between Camden and Little Venice, and leisure boats travelling to the Angel Canal Festival, on the Regent’s Canal in Islington on Sunday 5 September.

However the towpath does remain closed between Lisson Grove and Park Road, whilst National Grid repairs the problem cables. This action will prevent further leakage. British Waterways will continue to post updates about the extent of the towpath closure on its leisure website www.waterscape.com
