Change of date for Huddersfield canal open day
By: Janet Richardson
BRITISH Waterways’ scheduled Open Day on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal at Lock 31W has been changed from today (February 20) to Monday March 12.
An Open Day has already gone ahead along the canal at Lock 40E in January as part of British Waterways’ annual £50 million national winter maintenance programme where 15 locks are having new lock gates fitted or repairs carried out.
Members of the public are being given the opportunity to see inside the drained lock, watch British Waterways’ staff at work and chat to BW experts about how this skilled operation takes place.
Graham Lea, British Waterways’ Maintenance Manager for the Manchester & Pennine region said: “The recent spell of bad weather has meant that our works programme has been changed in order to get all 15 lock projects completed by the end of March. We apologise for any inconvenience caused but we hope that as many people will still be able to make it to view this skilled work.”
The event near the Diggle end of Standedge Tunnel on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal will take place on Monday March 12 from 10am-4pm.
