Art and culture at Dewsbury canal
By: Janet Richardson
A youth arts project is set to make its mark among the local community and canal users in the minster town of Dewsbury.
The result of a combined effort between British Waterways, Kirklees Children & Young People’s Service, Kirklees Regeneration & Development Team and Artworks Creative Communities, Bradford will see young people between the ages of 14-18 years old regenerate the local canal environment using art as a medium.
Following a similar project during the Dewsbury Canal festival, where illegal graffiti was removed and replaced with a spray art advert promoting the waterway, organisers are hopeful that the latest project will be as beneficial to the area.
Rebecca Dent, regeneration project officer for British Waterways North East said; “This is a great scheme to get young people involved in their local canal and see it in a different way.”
“During the build-up to the mural design, our environment and heritage specialists will be giving talks to the young adults to bring the canals to life and give them inspiration for the final eye-catching designs. It will provide them a fun environment to work in with a mix of people that they might not normally join together with. We want local communities to feel an increased sense of ownership in their local canal or river and be part of the waterways future and this is a creative way of getting people involved.”
