MP joins in IWA Lichfield Branch work party

VOLUNTEERS of IWA’s Lichfield Branch were assisted by Aidan Burley MP – the local member for Cannock Chase – and Darren Green, British Waterways’ Central Shires waterways manager, at their latest work party on Friday, September 9, to clear the Brindley’s Bank Aqueduct area in Rugeley. The historic wharf is accessed by the ‘Bloody Steps’, site of the infamous Christina Collins murder.

WHAT has been recognised as the largest gathering of historic working narrowboats in a modern marina took place in July at Alvecote, near Tamworth, on the Coventry Canal.

WITH some concerns over the commitment of the Government and the new waterways charity to transporting goods by water, there was a timely reminder of the importance of working canals at the Stoke Bruerne Canal Museum’s Annual Gala in June.
Moorcroft vase awarded at Etruria

ONE of the major features of this year’s 18th Etruria Canal Festival – held at the junction of the Trent & Mersey and Caldon canals around the Etruria Industrial Museum the heart of the city of Stoke-on-Trent over the weekend of June 4/5 – was a stunning prize for the best turned out traditional working narrowboat.
The world-renowned Stoke-on-Trent art pottery Moorcroft donated a limited edition vase, designed by Kerry Goodwin and entitled ‘Brindley’s Canal’, valued at more than £1200. Judges Chris Skelhorne and Harry Arnold of IWA Stoke-on-Trent Branch chose Teresa and Roger Fuller’s Ibex from the ten eligible boats and the prize was presented to the Fullers by local MP Tristram Hunt when he officially opened the festival.
A celebration of old and new at Crick

THE annual Crick Boat Show and Waterways Festival over the spring bank holiday weekend brought together boats and boaters who had plenty to feast their eyes on both on the water and in the trade area.

THE 27th annual Ellesmere boat rally of narrowboats of all shapes and sizes was truly a circus. The 'Big Top' was the theme for the three-day shindig last month and friends of the Shropshire Union Canal Society embraced it with gusto.
