Watch scheme to improve safety on River Avon

A MAJOR monitoring scheme designed to improve safety on the River Avon has been launched by Avon Navigation Trust vice-patron, actor Timothy West.

Although it would not have prevented the recent tragedy at Barford, which is above the navigable section of the river, it will monitor these levels to assess conditions further downstream.

Boat burnt out in suspected arson attack

16 May 2012.

A 40ft narrowboat was set alight and burnt out in Tipton in a suspected late night arson attack. The boat was on land adjoining the Birmingham New Main Line Canal at Factory Junction.
The fire brigade was called by customers at the nearby Barge and Barrel pub who saw flames shooting up 35 feet from the hull at 10.15pm on Saturday May 12.

Riverside village in mourning after boating tragedy

14 May 2012.

A BOATING tragedy has left a father and his three-year-old son dead and two other children seriously ill in hospital.
It is thought their small rowing boat overturned after being swept over a 3m high weir in white water conditions on the River Avon at Barford near Warwick.

Be part of a TV series

TV programme makers Plum Pictures are seeking anyone about to embark on a project to create a living space in a canal boat to take part in a new Channel 4 series on Micro Designs.

The six-part series, presented by George Clarke of Build a New Life in the Country fame, will showcase some of the most innovative and stunning small-scale projects happening around the UK.

Leicester Line reopens following April rainfall

11 May 2012.

BRITISH Waterways (BW) has reopened the Leicester Line of the Grand Union Canal today and lengthened some lock opening hours in areas affected by drought after reservoir holdings improved over April.

 

In March, BW published details of overnight lock closures at targeted locations in the Midlands and South to conserve water following continued dry weather. However the wettest April on record has helped to improve holdings at a number of reservoirs across the South East enabling many of these measures to be relaxed.

Actor launches Stratford’s new floating information centre

9 May 2012.

STRATFORD-upon-Avon's new water-based Information Centre has been officially launched by actor Timothy West, vice patron of Avon Navigation Trust (ANT).
Based on a barge floating in Stratford's Bancroft basin, it is open daily until October 31.
As well as acting as a toll station both for ANT and the newly formed Canal & River Trust, it also has a number of displays on board about the various waterway organisations such as the Inland Waterways Association, ANT, CRT and Stratford and Warwick Waterways Trust. The boat has a gift shop and also a meeting room.

Towergate Insurance covers customers in Jubilee pageant

8 May 2012.

BOAT insurance provider, Towergate Insurance, has announced it will automatically cover policyholders sailing down the Thames on the June 3 Diamond Jubilee event.

It is anticipated the flotilla will stretch for seven-and-a-half miles and feature private and commercially-owned modern and historic boats.

'Sub' comes under attack

5 May 2012.

POLICE are investigating reports that a canal boat converted into a replica of a U-boat and used as a museum, was vandalised while the ‘crew’ were asleep.

Self-styled Captain Richard Williams whose boat is moored in Clarence Dock in Leeds city centre said five or six youths clambered over the perimeter fence.

CRT finds top dog

4 May 2012.

WELSH Springer Spaniel, Jasper, has been chosen as the winner of a competition to find a ‘canal loving canine’ to front up a marketing campaign for the new national charity, Canal & River Trust.

He was chosen from around 1000 photographs featuring pet dogs enjoying their time on the 2000-miles of canal and river towpaths in England and Wales.
