Gales snap new road barriers

WHILE storm Doris was blowing trees down at various places around the canal system recently, she caused a different type of problem in West Lancashire, writes Colin Wareing.

The recently installed road barriers on the New Lane swing bridge, no 31 on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, snapped off in the gales.

The barriers had only been installed when the bridge controls were up graded and moved from the off side of the canal to the towpath side just before Christmas 2016.

As a safety measure for the road users the bridge was disabled to boaters and a stoppage notice issued by the Canal and River Trust.

A subsequent electrical problem meant that the stoppage was only lifted at the end of February.
