A TEMPORARY road has been constructed by filling in the Bridgewater Canal at Vicars Hall Bridge near Boothstown Marina, writes Colin Wareing.
Its purpose is to maintain access to a nearby farm while the bridge is realigned and replaced in connection with a proposed local housing development.
It was originally planned was to do this over the winter period so that there would be minimum disruption to boating traffic along the canal. It is an important link between the north and south of the inland waterways system, enabling navigation from the Leeds & Liverpool Canal in Wigan with the Rochdale Canal in Manchester and the Trent & Mersey at Preston Brook.
But work could not start until mid-February leading to concerns that boaters’ spring cruising plans could be threatened. It is scheduled to finish on May 24, 2017.
